A bit of both. The Greeks and Romans had a cultural taboo against polygamy which Christianity inherited, which means that Christians have historically been opposed to polygamy (which was not the case in Pre-christian northern Europe) on moral grounds. There is also the issue that historically polygamy has been associated with patriarchal societies in which men are allowed or expected to have multiple wives, but women are not allowed to do the same. Additionally, it is also culturally associated with treating women as property of the husband. Personally I don’t have any issue with polygamy if everyone is free to do whatever but the way most cultures practice it, it’s unfair to women. Then again, that could also he said of “traditional” marriage in a lot of monogamous scenarios too.

  • This is bizarre to me, I have literally never had this problem. Even if you don’t have a scale, pasta is sold in standardized package weights and recipes have the weight you need so like if it says 12 oz then that’s 3/4 of a 1 lb package. Then again, I always just scale the recipe to the full pound of pasta anyway because it’s easier to deal with instead of just having 4 oz of pasta sitting around trying to figure out what to do with.

Counterpoint - pizzas are sold by diameter, but pretty much everyone I know underestimates how diameter corresponds to actual pizza size and think a 16" pizza is twice as big as an 8" pizza instead of four times as big, which it actually is. Meanwhile, a burger patty that is twice as big as another one is actually twice as tall, while one that is wider is only about ~41% wider. Vertical dimension is more intuitive for the overall mass difference.

  • I’m just saying the whole premise of the meme is extremely flawed. It’s made to imply that modern life is in any way as bad as medieval serfdom and that is just not true. For example, did you know that most medieval peasants didn’t own their own ovens and were forced to take the food they produced to someone else to cook it if they weren’t eating something that could be cooked on a simple hearth? Or that they literally weren’t allowed to leave the land they were assigned to without permission from their lord? Yeah things are bad today but they were way worse back then.

  • I feel like if you had put half the time and effort it took to do this into improving yourself and going outside you could have at least gone on some dates with real women at this point. Talking to an AI chatbot is not the same as human connection and will only lead to further depression as you realize that no matter how much you “love” your AI girlfriend she will never truly love you back because she can’t think or feel, and fundamentally isn’t real.

  • On one hand this is obviously absurd but on the other hand I don’t actually know how one could solve the sheer scale of pedophilia happening on their platform without some dystopian shit. It seems like there is a maximum size for something like discord because at the scale it is now I’m not sure how you could possibly moderate it. I’ll probably stop using it if they implement this but I can definitely understand why they feel like it’s a good idea.

  • Yeah I legit think this is a bad thing. 4chan was bad for society but IMO it’s less so than mainstream social media. To get radicalized on 4chan you have to wade through some truly despicable shit right off the bat, where there is this friendly veneer on mainstream Internet that makes it seem safer and less horrifying even though the same underlying filth of human nature powers it all. If you encounter far right ideology on 4chan, it’s stripped of all of the edifices of respectability and it’s clear that what it is is raw unfiltered hatred. If you encounter it on Tik Tok it’s just another political viewpoint because they’re not allowed to show their true colors.

I know I was just saying 3000 years and basically nobody alive today understands the language. Even people who devote their whole lives to the languages around at that time are basically just making informed guesses on pronunciation and would probably struggle considerably to understand an actual speaker.
