  • I’m not looking to become a sysadmin

    And that’s fine and understandable. But I don’t think that Immich is for you. It’s not consumer-grade software. It’s a piece of Linux server software that requires occasional maintenance and administration. We haven’t seen a breaking update in a while but Immich does occasionally release updates where things will break if you don’t dig in to the config files and reconfigure it.

    If you’re self hosting then you could just copy all the files from your server onto an external drive. I have to say that’s not a great backup solution though, and you should learn more about administration of Linux servers so that when things break you can fix them. I wouldn’t rely on it as a safe solution to your photos otherwise.

  • If anyone’s interested, here’s my Immich backup script. You setup rclone to use an S3 storage service like BackBlaze which is quite cheap. I also use a crypt which means RClone will encrypt and decrypt all files to/from the server. S3 configuration and crypt setup.

    Then set this up as a cron job. With the “BACKUP_DIR” option when you delete a photo it will get moved to the “deleted” folder. You can go into your S3 provider’s lifecycle settings and have these get deleted after a number of days. I do 10 days. Or you can skip that and they’ll be gone forever.

    #!/bin/bash
    SRC_PATH="/path/to/immich/library"
    DEST_REMOTE="b2crypt:immich-photos/backup"
    BACKUP_DIR="b2crypt:immich-photos/deleted"
    RCLONE_OPTIONS="--copy-links --update --delete-during --backup-dir=$BACKUP_DIR --suffix `TZ='America/New_York' date +%Y-%m-%d`.bak --verbose"
    rclone sync $SRC_PATH $DEST_REMOTE $RCLONE_OPTIONS

    Leftists have always been mostly pro-gun. Not in a fetishist, burning desire to murder in the way that right wingers are. We just understand that it’s a lot harder to oppress an armed group, and also that the oppressive system isn’t gonna overthrow itself.

    That’s not to say change through peaceful means isn’t possible or shouldn’t be attempted as much as possible, but it has generally only ever worked with the threat of violence should it fail. But history and theory shows us it will probably come to violence.

    Who are we going to arm? Undocumented people? Trans people?

    Sounds like a great start. We’re all oppressed by capitalism, but marginalized like these are also oppressed in different ways on top of that (intersectionality). Good on identifying that.

    And they’re going to shoot who? The cops, ICE? what’s the plan General?

    We’ve not had to deal with large scale civil conflicts in most of the west for a while. But when it comes down to it, yeah probably. We haven’t reached that point yet, seemingly.

    But anyway if you still hold Liberal views about banning all guns from private ownership I urge you to encourage gun ownership among marginalized people. You will never see the government quicker to ban guns than the day they start arming themselves en masse. California’s (relatively) stronger gun laws started to be passed in response to Black Panther members encouraging much the same under Reagan’s governorship.

    GenZeDong? Sounds more like China. Not familiar with it.

    As for the rest I haven’t seen that, no.

    They may be more likely to side with any force opposing NATO/US/the west in international issues, however there’s no love for Putin or the post-USSR regime. Not supporting the USA on an international conflict is just, to them, the path to breaking western imperialism. That doesn’t mean they think Putin is a good dude, or that in any leftist country they envision Putin to be president.

    Check out this thread, there really isn’t any Putin worship in these spaces.

    I’m not expecting you to agree with their views I’m just tired of people being completely wrong about WHAT their views are.
