  • Something similar happened in Denmark with the new Sundhedloven, which had provisions allowing the government to forcefully isolate people in concentration camps, along with forcefully vaccinating them.

This was of course alarming for those who were in the know, but very few people protested (and the law was subsequently amended), but the general attitude from the public was “it’s not a problem because something like THAT would ever happen in Denmark.” 🤡

  • operating on the same principles

… Which are, by design, addictive.

    The upvote/downvote system particularly.

You get a rush every time your comment or post goes goes into the 3 digits in upvotes, be honest.

You don’t need a sophisticated algorithm to have an addictive design either. All you need is for your home feed to give you more of what you want, which is what your subscribed tab does by default.

Lastly, the “ingroup/outgroup” psychological trigger lemmy induces you into (which was copied from Reddit), is also in itself highly engaging.

  • Sorry to say, but both Zen and Floorp were obvious honeypots from the beginning.

Unsolicited advice, but don’t adopt the latest browser/search engine/OS that promise privacy and/or security, and you’ll avoid a lot of disappointment. Most fall apart at the seams within a year or less.

If the one browser/SE/OS you currently use works, stick with it until more research on the newer stuff comes out. Then you can reassess.

  • It requires opt-in,

Because GDPR requires it to be so. Ask people overseas if they can turn that feature off. With the current government they have in the US, is this really something that the anybody should be comfortable having?

Also, nothing is stopping malware from turning it on without your consent, because the technology will be backed in into the OS by default.

and if someone nefarious gets to the point they can read this stuff then they’ll already be able to record your screen, log keystrokes, etc

So we should just ignore that Microsoft just created a new attack vector that nobody asked for?

I expect it won’t be straightforward to view the data as well, it’s not just gonna be a folder full of jpegs.

    Source?

I’m glad that people are actually trying to make interesting features still.

What’s interesting about this? Not only are you training AI models using your data without getting paid for it, I don’t understand what use case you can have by asking Microsoft what porn you were watching at 2 am of February 19th. For important stuff that needs remembering, you can just go back to your browser history. Its easier to search there than to remember the specific time you were doing something anyway.

    Literally, nobody wants this.

OSs have been so boring years now, it’s good to see people actually trying to introduce standout features even if they are controversial. More of this I say.

Okay so this is that mindset that seems to permeate the Tech industry through and through, these days. The idea that things that are working fine, need to be forcefully “improved” even when it’s not necessary.

A pen can’t just be a pen anymore, it needs to connect to the cloud so that the ink levels can be properly measured and new ink sent to you on a subscription basis to make sure you never run out of ink.

A juicer needs its own proprietary juice bags and it won’t work with different ones, and how does it know you’re not using the brand’s originals? Why, it must be connected to the internet of course, otherwise it won’t juice.

Your car can’t just be a car anymore, it needs to have integrated mics and an internet connection so that the manufacturer can listen to all your calls and ear your sex sounds, and then sell that to advertisers who will know whether they should sell you a MagicWand or fisting lube, based on whether the moaning sounds they heard coming out of your car sound masculine or feminine.

    So on and so forth.

You might think your take is unique, but it really isn’t. It aligns perfectly with everything that companies want nowadays, which is to get your data at all costs.

For me, I want none of that shit. To the point that I go out of my way to make sure I only buy stuff that doesn’t connect to the internet.

Which, BTW, this is the privacy community, I thought there was a common understanding of how abusing these features are, but I guess not.

  • Don’t get me wrong, I have Grayjay installed, and it works flawlessly. Seems to work even better than Tubular which is what I use currently, and perhaps even better.

This is my only gripe (well, and the fact that it isn’t open source, but I can live with that), and I really want the project to succeed. I just can’t get past the perma dark mode, but I’ll stay on the lookout for when it releases a light mode, and I’ll start using it then because I really want the project to succeed.

  • Perhaps.

I mean, it’s not like YouTube creators are happy with the state of the platform either. They keep getting paid less and less to the point that they have to resort to begging for donations or include sponsorships in the videos.

I imagine at this point other platforms are well positioned to capitalize on what YouTube has been doing to the platform for some time now. Personally I really like what platform aggregators like Grayjay are doing: basically the idea of following creators, not platforms.

So you can just install Grayjay now through their website and you’ll be surprised by how many youtubers you follow are already on other platforms.

  • that’s the next phase of them trying to kick us off is just not serving people who do not have an account. So I would expect this to only increase over time.

A losing business model considering the amount of people who are sick and tired of the aggressive ad placements all YouTube have become.

Kicking out everyone who doesn’t log into a Google account would lead to an immediate loss in viewership throughout the month/year, and that wouldn’t do well with investors.

  • Did you just read “Data minimization” and assume it means that data collection should be minimized at all times?

There’s a reason why when you fill the GDPR consent popup all advertising companies have the “legitimate interest” on by default, because it falls under the “data that is necessary for their specified purposes”, which in their case means the purpose of displaying relevant ads and paying the app developer some money for it. And even then, you’re allowed to turn that legitimate interest OFF.

I’m the one who’s not sure if you’re trolling or just a shill. How many rubles are they paying you?

  • I did, but what you said is incorrect.

Not giving away your data isn’t encouraged and I challenge you to point out where in the law does that say. It would be stupid to even include such a passage because it would be a blatant attack on the advertising industry and the EU is a neoliberal pro-capitalist institution that wants businesses to operate inside the bloc.

And I say it again, this is a niche community, but a lot of people like targeted advertising.

I know, because I hate advertising and I preach to everyone around me that they should just reject all tracking and some have told me “but I want to see relevant ads. If I have to see ads they might as well be relevant to me.” which is a totally fair point.

  • and if it could be sent to third parties then only with the user’s consent.

You literally said it. Apple removes this option.

Why are you even upset? Its not like you’re being forced to allow your data to be transmitted. The GDPR wants a standardised way of choosing which apps can track you and which don’t, and Apple is out of the norm. You’re just upset because the EU is forcing apple to standardise, is that it? Were you also upset when the EU forced apple to adopt USB-C too? You’re literally complaining about having more choice.

Also, I cannot shake off the feeling that everyone in this sub is just shilling allowing a massive US conglomerate to exploit all digital ad revenue on EU soil, while local smaller companies get jack.

It would be like some EU car manufacturer selling electric cars in the US that van only be charged using proprietary chargers from the EU. Surely consumers would be upset at the lack of choice, and with reason.

Or maybe not. After all, tesla was allowed to do just that for a very long time. In any case, the EU is opening business opportunities (or rather, re-opening them) by shutting down a monopolistic practice that harms competition. The US refuses to make use of their antitrust laws, so we have to do it for you. You’re welcome.

  • My opinion on the matter is irrelevant, I’m just explaining what the case is about.

The advertising industry is real, and will keep existing, whether you like it or not. And yes, having the option to be an informed consumer and choose who gets to track you is a net positive. Some people LIKE targeted ads.

Plus, it’s not like Apple was protecting you from ads so I don’t know what your point even is? You’re defending them having a monopoly on who sets to advertise to you, nothing more nothing less.
