When I get my IROC I’m planning to do this.

remembering what your grandkid likes is dementia now?
I had this the other way with my ex. She would say “I always liked X” and then I’d get her an X-related gift and she’d go “um okay, random.” Thing is she was supposedly feeding me with hints I never got.
It’s kinda fucked up how few people are comprehending this photo. They think it’s about fridges full of one thing
ssfckdt@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL the generic but world famous 'Happy Birthday to You' song was actually copyrighted until 2016English2·18 days agothe very idea of a regular birthday party wasn’t really widespread before the era
Can we go back to that? I hate birthdays.
ssfckdt@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL the generic but world famous 'Happy Birthday to You' song was actually copyrighted until 2016English54·18 days agoWellllllllll
It actually wasn’t, but someone claimed it was, and would sue people who used it. Most would settle and agree not to use it. This is also why most chain restaurants had their own alternative birthday songs.
It was only that in 2016 somebody actually said to them “prove it” and took them to court, which found their copyright claim to be without merit.
Incidentally, there is no penalty for this.
Somebody never had a clock with roman numerals and it shows
I remember getting into an argument with a grade school teacher over IIII because most such clocks put that for 4 instead of IV because of some fuckin reason
I’m guilty of the other way. I really don’t know what else my mother is into nowadays, but since she raised me on Star Trek, I usually just get her Star Trek shit.
The thing is, she loves it every time. Or claims to.
My grandmother stocked raisins in a jar in her kitchen for 30 years because I once said I liked raisins.
It was cool to know there was a jar of raisins there basically just for me to have raisins. But I eventually didn’t like raisins all that much anymore. But of course I’d have to have some raisins because she was keeping them there for me.
annuities my dude
1M is 2-3 yr salary??? Hook a brother up with these $300-500k/yr job leads d00d
Sure there are plenty of situations where services remain open and free (for now), like wikipedia, linux distros, etc. but we aren’t always that lucky.
It’s got absolutely fuck all to do with “luck.” It has everything to do with adoption.
Most people won’t adopt things that aren’t sufficiently pretty. They’re more than happy being data whores for social media pimps because it’s so fun.
Nah.
I mean, if they became rich, maybe. Certainly contrast Stanford-era Brin with modern Google, sure.
But um… Nah.
The #corpolitical
I have a very very real problem with this oversimplification of very distinct tech viewpoints.
Like, what, you dont think information should be freely available? You LIKE the model where information is locked down with hefty fees? Because that’s what the actual “tech bros” want.
This is at best ignorant and at worst just hateful.
ssfckdt@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto memes@lemmy.world•4chan... A part of internet (history) for sure3·2 months agoSomedays I wonder if that was driven by actual rightwing sentiment, or by a desire to just destroy and hack everything. Go back to the days of gaming American Idol to push Sanjaya, or the gags of gaming other polls to like, send Bieber to North Korea or Pitbull to Alaska etc.
Like, they realized they could do a lot, and just keep finding ways to go even further.
I look at what TFG is doing nowadays and honestly if it wasn’t a system I depend on to live, it would be easy to mistake him for some kind of grey hat hacker exploiting every single hole he can find in said system in the worst possible way in order to compel people to close them.
I will say this, too… 4chan’s opintel is completely amazing. The way they were able to track Shia Lebouf’s HWNDU by doing things like… correlating airplane noises with flight patterns is like… beyond next level.

ssfckdt@lemmy.blahaj.zoneto memes@lemmy.world•4chan... A part of internet (history) for sure643·2 months agoHot take, but I dare say 4chan was the source of as much of what’s good in internet culture as it was for much of what’s the worst in internet culture.
Rickroll, Caturday, the modern meme format, reaction gifs, “TLDR”, Anonymous (well, the good versions of it), spoderman, Rule 34, trollface, rageface, quite a bit of pet abuse justice, … they may have even successfully set back AI chatbots nearly a full decade with their gaming of Microsoft’s Tay chatbot… quite a lot of modern Internet slang such as win, fail, an hero, based, copypasta, creepypasta, “god tier”, lulz, moar, sauce…
The thing about anarchy is that it brings out both the best and the worst.
