Makes enough sense. My point was that either printing a replacement or getting the OEM part will use about the same amount of plastic, assuming the printing only takes one attempt.

I have a hunch that those knobs are just a thin sheet of metal wrapped around a piece of plastic, which would explain why one of the knobs broke off in the first place.
I could be wrong, just a hunch.
Lucky for us, that’s not the only vector! Baby foods keep getting recalled because of lead contamination, and the FDA just released a new limit on lead content in baby food.
Except, they are just guidelines and are not enforceable.
That’s custom software on custom firmware, which is very extraneous to the average consumer…
It’s also not a “released” phone in the sense that Google isn’t selling it in that state.

To be fair, when you first install it/set up an account, it doesn’t know what you like, so it shows you the most generally popular material. A lot of that popular material is pretty… uncomfortable.
