Every different part of computer setup/OS/resolution/extension/etc is a data point that can be used to uniquely identify you and track your web browsing. Generally any desktop computer will have a unique fingerprint, the only hardware setup I’ve heard of being common enough to avoid fingerprinting is something like using safari on a modern iphone.

I think the issue is that devices with screens are usually meant to be your window to experience something else. When you get immersed in something, you forget about the device and focus on the experience.

I like playing games, and when I get into a game the focus is on the game itself, not the controller/TV/etc. I’ve had dreams about games, but it’s always me experiencing the game directly and not focused at all on the details of how I’m accessing the game.

I think it’s the same with phone use, but the experiences we get on a phone are harder to imagine as a"direct experience". Things like sending a text message don’t convert well to a fully immersive experience, so I think our brain skips over them.

Wait this is in the US? How, this is even more expensive than Hawaii, and they have obvious reasons for power to be more expensive there

That seems really high, I think power where I live is about 12-14 cents per kilowatt hour. What makes it so expenses where you live?

Yeah, I think a good approach to any type of government powers is considering that future presidents/parties you don’t like will also have access to these powers.

I would absolutely love it if the threat of the future Trumps is a limiting factor on government overreach.

They want access, they just don’t want china to have access. Of course, when you add a backdoor it’s best to assume everyone will use it sooner or later.

Some people prefer CRTs for gaming, there’s much less input lag, and differences in the way images are displayed means that you can often run games at lower resolutions than pixel based displays without as much of a decrease in image quality. Here’s a DF video talking about some of the advantages.

Also CRTs can be pushed to insanely high frame rates, although this can be limited by how much you reduce the resolution. For example, one guy got his to run at 700hz refresh rate (by dropping resolution to 120p).

Yeah, not saying it’s not scummy business. It probably can be a decent treatment for non-serious conditions if the placebo effect gives the patient relief, but any serious condition will need real treatment.

People know that they can get a placebo treatment, but they don’t know if they actually got a placebo or the real treatment. They’re also generally hoping both that they got the real treatment, and that the real treatment will make things better.

Maybe calling it deception isn’t fully accurate, but the the point is that they’re given something they hope is medicine, but in reality it’s the placebo treatment.

Placebos only work if the people think they’ll work. Funnily enough, it is possible to be aware something is a placebo and still expect it to work, but generally placebos involve some deception where the person thinks they’re receiving real treatment.

So yes, people selling homeopathic remedies are going to claim they’re real treatments, both to convince people to buy them, and because they’ll be most effective if people think they’re real. And the people buying them will also be the people who believe they’re actually effective, causing them to actually have an effect.

And how much were they sold to boys cause idiotic families pushed them only on the boys?

Sure, but what was Lego supposed to do about that? They could have started a multi-decade advertising campaign to try to change social perceptions of girls vs boys toys, and maybe that would have eventually paid off. Or they could just make specific “girl” Legos.

As a business that wants to make money, they went with the latter option and it worked really well. And realistically, I don’t think we should expect individual companies to try changing society instead of just targeting their products to society as it is.

It’s also worth mentioning that when Lego did studies on it, they found that girls played with their toys differently. The girl Legos were designed to be based around a different type of play, that was supposed to be more appealing. It wasn’t as simple as this is in pink and has girly lettering on the box.

Legos have typically sold more to boys. For a long time, Legos were meant to be gender neutral, but it didn’t work out and 90% of Legos sold were to boys. It was bad enough that Lego felt a need to create girl targetted legos in 2012, to try to capture some of that market. The “Friends” Lego sets were enormously successful, and tripled sales of Legos to girls in the first year it came out.

It’s also common to target an audience by having the characters be reflective of the audience. If you write a book targeted at elementary school boys, you usually want it to start an elementary school boy.

So I’m not surprised that most traditional LEGO figures are boys after decades of boy dominated sales.

Additional fact: Guinness World Records was the same Guinness as Guinness beer. It was created by Hugo Beaver the managering director of Guinness Breweries, the book was distributed to pubs and used as a promotion for the brand.

I noticed something similar on websites like Reddit. I’ve come across an answer for a question on something I’m well educated on, and their answer is definitively wrong but “sounds correct”. The reddit community will up vote them, and even down vote people who try correcting them.

But then later on I would come across a post on a topic I don’t know, and I’m inclined to believe the answers because they sound right and there’s a group consensus backing it up.

I would hope so, but Asus has been doing things like this for at least 10+ years which makes me doubtful that anything will change soon.

Trying to refund through Asus will result in them dragging their feet, being as unhelpful as possible, or claiming you damaged the product.

It restoring deleted photos onto wiped devices that have been resold is a privacy nightmare.

It has an announcement banner at the top that (when clicked) says the site is being shut down in 6 days.

Reddit has long had an issue with confidently providing false statements as fact. Sometimes I would come along a question that I was well educated on, and the top voted responses were all very clearly wrong, but sounded correct to someone who didn’t know better. This made me question all the other posts that I had believed without knowing enough to tell otherwise.

Llms also have the same issue of confidently telling lies that sound true. Training on Reddit will only make this worse.
