Lee’s more strict expectations and harsher punishments of the slaves on Arlington plantation nearly led to a revolt, since many of the enslaved people had been given to understand that they were to be made free as soon as Custis died, and protested angrily at the delay.

I would have thought that data would be worth more. Maybe the AI guys will just steal it, instead?
Carl’s Jr. did the same thing. The 1/3 pound was perfect. Two 1/4 patties are too much, one 1/4 patty is too little.
I miss the Carl’s Jr. 1/3 pound burger.
One can never be too prepared. “Prepared for what?” is the question.
Someone near the top got the idea that the brand matters more than consistency in message.
When people started calling Coca-Cola, “Coke”, they didn’t change the name to “Cola”, and they didn’t abandon Coca-Cola.
Just one more example of meritocracy being dead. Fools at the top pulling levers they don’t understand just because they can.
When I read /r/teachers and all the trouble they’re having teaching the next generation, this is the sort of thing I imagine is coming. A couple of years ago, GenZ was saying, in essence, “We just need to wait for all the ‘boomers’ to die off, then everything will be better.” No. No, that will just make things worse. GenX leftists are the only ones holding the line, and Millennial teachers are about to give up and walk away, seriously. It’s pretty fuckin’ bad, and it’s clear it’s going to get worse, looking at how many kids are coming up through the school system who can barely read and write and have practically zero attention span or motivation.
Like most people, five with occasional visits to the others.

Is it because they don’t trust that anyone in their life likes them for who they are, instead of their money? Maybe, it’s because their own kids and wives hate them?

It wasn’t all Orange Julius and great music.
And, the phones were built to take it.
I didn’t know this, but I’m not shocked, or even a little bit surprised.
TrackinDaKraken@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•That's all folks, Plex is starting to charge for sharingEnglish21·1 month agoIn 2012 (ish), I bought a lifetime subscription for a flat $75. Over the next few years of using it, they got worse and worse with shit like this, so I switched to Emby for a bit, and then Jellyfin. I never shared with friends, tho, because I have no friends, so it was always just a pretty interface and convenience for me. Lately, I’ve just been opening the files directly in VLC, because Remmina is refusing to connect to my media server, and I can’t be arsed to figure out why.
TrackinDaKraken@lemmy.worldto memes@lemmy.world•Why does it always feel so awkward?English2·1 month agoNah. If they don’t laugh, you blame them. “No, the children are wrong.”
$17 for a burger, even if it really did look like the picture, which we all know it doesn’t, is way too much. No, thank you.
I pay $12/day to feed myself. I make all of my own meals at home, I haven’t eaten out since the pandemic. I formed the habit, and just kept cooking at home as prices got ridiculous. My diet is excellent, mostly fresh vegetables, and organic chicken.
I’ve found Startpage to be a good, easy alternative. I’ve tried DuckDuckGo and SearxNG, but I think they are more extreme than I need.
Every 100 years, I guess. We gotta go through all the shit every 100 years.
