So for someone to “decrypt” an overexposed picture, they would be, by dictionary definition, trying to interpret what the ambiguous picture was actually showing, since the lighting was making it unclear.

I joined Plex after I already needed to have a login to plex.tv to be able to stream. I understand that that already was problematic, but Plex was leagues ahead of its competition in terms of ease of adding users, as well as polish. You must be forgetting how awful Jellyfin was in comparison, even just 5 years ago. I’ve been keeping up on Jellyfin and it’s amazing how far they’ve come. Now Jellyfin has great theme options, a simple-to-install skip intro/outro plugin, an app option with built-in jellyseerr integration, decent collections support (still needs some work here on feature parity with Plex, but it’s on the way) and with Wizarr, onboarding new users is as easy as sending an invite link, just like Plex. All this came in the last 5 years, and were pretty much requirements for my use cases.

Sure you can say that I’m picky, but Plex really was the best option until like, this year. I started to accept the need to switch when they added the social media aspect to it. They completely ignored what their users actually wanted. Since then, they’ve been making worse and worse decisions, which is crazy because now more than ever their competition has reached their level. Hell, by pushing all their users away, Plex is only going to accelerate the development on Jellyfin.

I’m all for all-gender bathrooms, but there MUST be at least two public bathrooms at any given spot. I can’t tell you how uncomfortable it is to take a first date to a museum, both need to use the bathroom, and walk into the single, silent, all-gender bathroom, and try to pretend you can’t hear each other doing your business. I assume gay folks have been struggling with this since the beginning, but y’all should have said something

I pay for the streaming services, but don’t stream. Maybe this is me trying to justify “theft”, but how I like to think about it is this: I pay for the streaming services. I have the technical know-how to either download directly or rip (screen record) any shows I want from any of the popular services, as well as to write the scripts myself to roughly automate this. I also have spare computers to do this 24/7. However, it’s actually better for the streaming service that I don’t do this myself, since they still get my money without me using the bandwidth. I pay for AMC Stubs A-list but don’t often see the movies in theaters, so I don’t feel bad pirating new releases. As for movies/shows not on streaming services, I could buy used dvd/blurays, rip them myself, then sell them back, but that would ultimately result in a near-net-zero cost anyway, so what’s the point of going through all that? In my mind, as long as I’m paying for these subscriptions pirating feels like it’s no longer an ethical/moral gray area.

Note that I only do this because I can afford to. When I was younger, I would pirate everything without worrying because if I couldn’t afford to pay the streaming service, they didn’t lose a potential customer if I pirated anyway. Now that I am better off and would definitely be paying for these subscriptions, I might as well, but still get to own the content I’m paying for. 120TB and counting!

For those with preexisting lifetime memberships, things haven’t changed yet (outside of basically trying to make Plex a social media thing), but in my eyes it’s only a matter of time. Made the switch to Jellyfin this week after having used Plex for 5 years. If I wanted to invite new users to join my server, they’d have to pay $2 a month to be able to watch on their phone instead of the one-time payment of $5.

It does have it, and I’ve seen different farms for each one that claims to be a different farm. However, it’s not a live feed, it’s a prerecorded video of the chickens on the farm. It does seem ethical, but I would prefer live feed since anyone can take a video per farm and then not let the chickens out ever again.

I don’t have experience on Windows, but I will send you my docker compose files that automagically set up the networking between containers sometime tonight. Basically I’ve got a gluetun container, and all morally ambiguous traffic routes through that container.

I agree that Stremio is probably best for less tech-savvy users, but I prefer recommending open source over proprietary, free over paid subscriptions, and self-hosted over relying on some company to remain in service. I also prefer having local copies of my media so that I don’t lose anything to no seeders on old media. Of course, there still is a cost component for me, I have to buy hard drives and maintain the server myself.

However, I just want people to move off of streaming services, so if you can help others with a streamio + real debrid setup, please do!

Sure. If you are comfortable with computers, this should be a breeze. I currently use Docker as my server platform, which can run on top of any OS you want, but I run it on debian. I run a Gluetun container + Mullvad for VPN, qBittorrent as the torrent client, Jellyfin for media, Jellyseerr for user requests, Sonarr for TV management, Radarr for movie management, and Prowlarr for torrent indexers. All of these run on separate docker containers. There’s some trickiness for getting all the sketchy traffic going through the VPN, but there are plenty of guides out there, and in DMs I’m willing to offer support, albiet pretty slowly. If you have used Plex in the past, you can replace Jellyfin + Jellyseerr with Plex + Overseerr and the rest of the system can stay the same (although plex has been making some weird moves lately, and isn’t free or open source, so I’d stick with Jellyfin if you can get past a relatively ugly UI).

The nice thing about this setup is it’s pretty easy to expand to music, ebooks, and audiobooks as well, but for those media types there is less automation for user requests. I haven’t had any issues with scaling up either, I’ve currently got 150+ TB of media.

You can have your own media server that automatically downloads all the new episodes of shows you want across all streaming services, and your friends and family can even request movies/shows they want to see from a web UI and those will also be automatically downloaded. All using free and open source software. Completely ad free.

Anyone here that also knows how to set this up should also offer to help others, as it is pretty much the only way to break free from streaming services.

Can confirm, this exists and it works even if the phone is turned off or runs out of battery midway through the wipe, I’ve tested it. I have no use for it personally, but it’s pretty neat!
