One doesn’t buy a 3D printer to make a knob. One is suddenly presented with a need for a knob (or a thingy, or a flangle, or a twizzlet…) and suddenly remembers, “hey - I have a 3D printer.” Followed by “I wonder if there are any matching designs in one of the several massive free databases of models.”

It was a long time ago, but I have a vague memory of my mother making something distressingly close to this. I want to say she used one of those Easter lamb cake molds or something similar. She was a good cook and didn’t lack artistic ability - but had no sense of “this looks like an abomination.” Or “maybe I should slice this before trying to serve it.”
13·3 months agoI’ve always called it “map brain,” and am fascinated to watch people who don’t have that ability.
For example, my husband has been to the library and he has been to the grocery store. From home, he can get to either without any trouble. But if he’s at the grocery store and needs to go to the library? He’ll need to go home first. He just can’t visualize the steps if it’s a new path. He’s a brilliant guy, but he has a foggy brain map.
I’m pretty much the opposite, but what I love about GPS is that they’ll tell you which lane is optimal for the next exit. If it’s a new route, that’s super helpful.
Ohio. They’re invasive and only arrived in large quantities here about 6-8 years back. They’re in the Chicago area as well.
Spiders, giant spiders, stink bugs, the new type of stink bugs that somehow look grosser than the regular stink bugs, mice… We’re absolutely at that stage right now.
Two humans and four half-way competent cats can’t keep up.
I’ve devised so many stink bug removal devices it’s not even funny. The first was a paper towel tube with a little bag on the other end. Now I’ve got a wide mouth jar with some detergent water in it. A fancy little spoon coaxes them inside. They die quickly.
It’s not for everyone, but Penguin Island by Anatole France features great auks. I read it many years ago and enjoyed it (in a dorky 19th century satire sort of way). Not for everyone.
6·6 months agoPresumably it’s the same reason that I couldn’t find a way to close my bank account (in person, at the fucking bank) in 1998. And presumably it’s the same reason that my elderly parents can’t get their Medicare supplemental insurance agent to close out their account prior to their move to another state, where that insurance won’t be accepted.
You’re a customer. They love you. Reasons.
I feel like an artificer would be skilled in the application of rouge. As well as foundation and eyeliner.
