Your best bet is to purchase your own domain name for email and learn how to switch DNS / MX records, so if you need to switch email providers you aren’t constantly changing your IP address
This is slightly more involved but it is the best option. This way it does not matter if proton is a good alternative or not, you can easily switch whenever you want.
